Fliers
Prologue: Battle of the Beasts
“Mistpack, head for the Everglades,” a dragon named Loki growled. Loki was a green dragon with a scar on his eye. He has been through many battles of Enderpack, Coalpack, Windpack, and Emberpack. All five packs are at peace right now, but there are pack wars at times. Emberpack was a spirit pack, which is the leader of the packs.
Loki and his pack headed toward the Everglades, which was the hunting area for this pack and Enderpack. Another dragon named Fourhorns looked up at the Everglades. “Are you sure you want to go in there? It looks pretty scary,” Fourhorns asked.
“Of course I want to go in there!” Loki snapped back. “Now, let’s go in there and get some food.” Loki set his gaze on Coalpack Rouges.
“Loki, do you see the Rouges?” asked a young dragon, Jadewings. Her pitied young voice was… too small for Loki to hear.
“Get out of the area. We don’t want a fight.” Loki and his pack set off to home, when they heard a feint growl.
Jadewings looked at the ground and saw a dragon battle. She told Loki about the battle, and they swooped down to go see. The cold air was burning Jadewings’ wing flaps, so she stood behind to recover.
She landed on the ground in pain, and put her wings in some hot water. It stung with a healing power. She shrieked because of the boiling water. A tear formed in one eye and then the other. Two tears. Uncommon for a dragon.
Every dragon only cries one tear. The legend of the Fire Dragon said that only one will come when the dragon is in pain and one when it dies. Jadewings is coming to her death.
(TEN MINUTES EARLIER) Loki saw an ice dragon breathing her cold fumes. “BARREL ROLL!” he shouted. Jadewings didn’t seem to hear, but she kept behind.
“Where did Jade go?” Loki asked his partner, Ice.
“The last time I saw her, she was going to the watering hole to heat up her frost-fumed wings.”
“You take the lead, I have to go stop her!”
(AT THE LAKE) “JADE!” Loki shouted as he flew down to her. “No,” he whispered. “No. This can’t happen!” Loki saw the two tears leaking down her face. “My own daughter…”
“I love you dad,” Jadewings whispered, and was forever gone.
